Nee, in dit land ziet hij de vervulling van Gods rijke belofte voor Israël. Bij de inname en opdeling van het land geeft God hem dan ook een bijzondere taak. Jozua volgt Mozes op als leider.
Een volmaakt mens is Jozua niet. Hij heeft ook zijn zwakke kanten. Het volk waar hij leiding aan geeft is ook geen volmaakt volk. Daarvan getuigt dit boek ook. Naast gebeurtenissen die duidelijk van geloofsmoed spreken, wordt ook verteld van momenten waarop het volk faalt.
Echter, ondanks alles blijft God naar zijn volk omzien. Hij blijft getrouw aan zijn eens gegeven belofte. Daarom is het boek Jozua ook bij uitstek het boek van Gods trouw. Bovendien wijst God Israel telkens weer naar hun heilrijke toekomst. Een toekomst waarin Hij komen zal van wie Jozua een voorafspiegeling is: Jezus, de Messias.
