Omschrijving Peter, Susan, Edmund en Lucy gaan uit logeren in het geheimzinnige, grote huis van een oude professor. Als ze op de eerste dag samen het huis gaan verkennen, zien ze een grote oude kleerkast staan in een lege kamer. Lucy verstopt zich in de kleerkast. Tot haar schrik zit er helemaal geen achterkant in de kast. Via de kleerkast komt zij, en komen haar broers en zus later ook terecht in het wonderlijke land Narnia. Daar strijden ze onder leiding van de machtige leeuw Aslan tegen de Witte Tovenares en haar dienaren. En juist als ze denken dat ze de strijd verloren hebben, blijkt Aslan nog veel machtiger dan iemand had kunnen denken. De pentekeningen van Pauline Baynes zijn al jarenlang wereldwijd karakteristiek voor vele edities van de Kronieken van Narnia. In deze nieuwe editie heeft ze haar illustraties, meer dan vijftig jaar oud, van kleur voorzien. Toen C.S. Lewis een illustrator zocht voor zijn kinderboek Het betoverde land achter de kleerkast, kwam hij al snel bij Pauline Baynes. Zij had immers het laatste sprookje van zijn vriend Tolkien perfect geïllustreerd. Hun samenwerking was bijzonder goed. De tekst die Lewis schreef was zo gedetailleerd, dat Baynes vrijwel nooit om verduidelijking hoefde te vragen. En de tekeningen die ze voor hem maakte, horen inmiddels net zo zeer bij de Narniaverhalen als de tekeningen van E.H. Shepard bij De wind in de wilgen of Winnie-de-Poeh. Illustrator: Pauline Baynes
