In de media duikt hij slechts op in rubrieken over vergeten voetballers. ‘Dat heeft alles met mijn spraak te maken. Als er vroeger een camera in mijn buurt kwam, sprintte ik weg. Ik wilde niet stotterend op tv.’ Teamgenoten als Phillip Cocu, John van den Brom, Theo Bos en Edward Sturing werden na hun spelerscarrière bekende trainers, Martin Laamers is na jarenlange werkloosheid en een overwonnen gokverslaving al blij met zijn baan als schoonmaker. Zijn spraakgebrek heeft een grote impact op zijn leven gehad. ‘Erger dan het stotteren is de stress van het niet durven praten. Die stress is weggevallen nu ik eindelijk schijt heb aan mijn spraakgebrek.’ Nadat bekende schrijvers als Michel van Egmond, Hugo Borst en Marcel van Roosmalen hem hebben afgewezen, volgt Remco Kock ex-profvoetballer Martin Laamers.
